And the lead is the historic scoring week in the NFL and in the BSL. Since 2004, the 1st year the BSL had multiple leagues when the FSDL joined the CDL, the BSL has never has all of its leagues have at least one 200+ pt game in the same week at the same time. The first time it actually happened was in 2010, so even 4 years after the TLSL joined the fun in 2006. Since 2010, we have seen two 200+ point games in the different leagues in the same week a total of 6 times, the last time was last year it happened was actually last season in Week 7 when the CDL’s Tanzmanian Devils and TLSL’s Avengers both had over 200 points. But we have never had 3 teams in the same week, let alone 1 for each league at the same time… Until now! Congrats to the CDL’s Mighty Mites [201.57] (more on this auspicious Welcome Back to the Mites later), the FSDL’s Midway Monsters [208.23] and the TLSL’s Bills Mafia [203.90] on this historic feat. We have now had 71 200+ games in BSL history. The CDL is still far in the lead with 32 such games. For the record this was the Monsters’s 3rd game over 200, this was the Bills Mafia’s 1st time and for the Mites this was their 2nd, but more importantly they become the first franchise to have a 200 pt game in more than 1 league. Their first came in 2009, yes 17 years ago, when they scored 206.32 in Week 8. Welcome back Andi, the CDL is better for it. Although your husband may not agree!)
As for the new season we are so quickly being thrown into with our heads on point scoring fire apparently, we see the new faces on top and old top dogs ending Week 1 with their tail between their legs. All 3 defending champions lost this week. The CDL’s Tanz Devils (0-1) lost their initial game to the Brahma Bulls (1-0) by 27. The FSDL Champion Sinister 36ers (0-1) lost their opening game to the Hebrew Hammers (1-0) by 17, and the TLSL’s champs the St. Pete Minutemen (0-1) lost their first outing by 34! Not a great start for the title winners. On the other end, new owners the FSDL’s Glazers and Shadi Your Daddy (both 1-0) and TLSL’s Deez TDs (1-0) come out making it look easy. Speaking of new ownership, sort of, the TLSL’s FL Nittany Lions are also (1-0) and back under ownership of the Gross family, so welcome back Mike and keep doing your Dad proud! In the CDL we didn’t have to wait long for a BSL standard to show its face, as Week 1 gives us two close games, one squeaker as the California Eclipse (1-0) beat the Blue Coats (0-1) by just 2.37 [129.47 – 127.10] and the other decided by less than 1 reception as the Guilder Dread Pirates (1-0) take down the NY Jints (0-1) by 0.29 [160.84 – 160.55]. The Jints couldn’t match their namesakes who both won in the NFL this week (Jets and Giants). And since that only happens once in a generation the Jints may have to wait a WHILE to try again.
One thing that does remain constant are early season injuries. With early losses of top players like Myles Garrett and AJ Brown, and up-in-the-air diagnosis for players like WRs Ladd McConkey and Trey Flowers among several other normally top producers, owners are already scrambling to manage their IL and IR slots as early as ever. Although, and we may be Seaning ourselves (jinxing for the uninitiated) the fact that Christian McCaffery is not on any of these injury lists already seems to be a sign that maybe things will be a little different this season, but that isn’t any consolation for the teams dealing with big multi-week absences already. All we can say is welcome back to fantasy football. We all do it for the love of the game and not the sadomasochistic thrill of cursing in the ether every time a breaking news alert comes across our phone. Silent the notification, take a deep breath and remember… there are 16 more weeks of this to go!
